Ergonomics for Your Baby

Are Baby Carriers from BabyBjörn Ergonomic?

For us, ergonomics – for both baby and parent – is a top priority when developing our baby carriers. Part of this means making sure our carriers adapt to your baby’s rapid growth, so your baby stays comfy at all times. But it’s also about enabling you to make the adjustments that will keep you comfortable while babywearing.

Are Baby Carriers from BabyBjörn Safe for My Child’s Hips?

All our baby carriers have been developed in close cooperation with medical experts to encourage a young baby’s development.

Why is the Baby's Position in a Baby Carrier So Important?

There are many positions in a baby carrier that are good for the baby. The most important thing is that their airways are free and their head is supported when the neck is not yet strong enough to hold it up.

All BabyBjörn baby carriers are hip healthy and provide your baby with the proper support for their hips, thighs, neck and back while still allowing unobstructed movement. We recommend that you carry your baby facing inward during the first five months while they are still small and need proper support for their neck muscles.

Can Baby Carriers Cause Hip Problems in Babies?

There’s no evidence showing any link between baby carriers that keep the legs apart and hip dysplasia. Our baby carriers are developed in collaboration with
paediatric orthopaedic doctors to make sure your baby’s hips, neck and back are supported in the best way possible. All BabyBjörn baby carriers are acknowledged as hip healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI).

What does “hip healthy” mean?

All BabyBjörn baby carriers are ergonomic and acknowledged as hip-healthy carriers by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. This means that they keep the legs comfortably apart and support healthy hip development.

Why is a wide leg position important?

As your baby grows, the wide leg position offers better pressure relief and weight distribution.

Is there any risk of “crotch dangling” in your baby carriers?

It’s important to follow the instructions and adjust the baby carrier settings to the size of your child. This ensures that your child always sits in a comfortable and supportive position. Remember that a baby’s legs are proportionally much shorter than an adult’s.

Why is neck support so important?

A newborn lacks the strength to hold their (relatively heavy) head upright unaided. It takes several months for the baby’s neck muscles to develop. That’s why a newborn needs support for their neck when they’re carried in a baby carrier. All baby carriers from BabyBjörn have adjustable head support.

Why is Alternating Between Babywearing Positions Such a Good Idea?

Changing babywearing positions every now and then is great for both you and your little one. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends changing position every hour for babies under the age of one. This not only keeps everyone comfortable, but is also key to healthy hip development.

What is the M-position?

Baby carriers are available in different models. The M-position is just one good position where the baby’s knees are held in a higher position than their hips. Our baby carriers are designed so that the baby has freedom of movement and you are able to adjust your baby’s position.

When Can I Start Carrying My Baby in the Facing-Out Position?

Most babies are capable of holding their head upright unaided at around the age of five months. They may then be ready to be carried in the facing-out position. Before this, the baby’s neck muscles are usually not sufficiently developed.

Is It Safe to Carry on Your Back?

When your child has grown a little heavier, carrying them on your back may be more comfortable for you and more fun for your child. Baby Carrier Harmony, Baby Carrier One and Baby Carrier One Air have been developed for safe and secure back-carrying. But you should wait to carry your child on your back until they are at least one year old.

I Easily Get Back Pain, So Which Baby Carrier Should I Choose?

Even young babies that don’t weigh very much can feel heavy after a while. To avoid back pain, choose a baby carrier designed to ease pressure on your back and shoulders. Baby Carrier Harmony is designed with padded shoulder straps, padded back support and a comfortable waist belt. Baby Carrier Free has padded shoulder straps and padded back support to relieve pressure, and Baby Carrier One and Baby Carrier One Air have padded shoulder straps and a supportive waist belt. Read more in our Baby Carrier Guide to find the right carrier for you and your baby.

My Partner and I Are Very Different in Size – Can We Use the Same Baby Carrier?

Yes, our baby carriers are ergonomic for both babies and babywearers and can be adjusted to most body shapes.

When Can You Start Using a Baby Carrier?

It’s a good idea to pack a baby carrier in your hospital bag since you can use it from day one. Just make sure your baby meets the minimum weight requirement for the baby carrier you’ve chosen. While all our baby carriers can be used for newborns, the softness, compact size and simplicity of Baby Carrier Mini make it a clear favourite for many parents. A newborn wants a lot of closeness, so a baby carrier is incredibly useful to have in the early days.

Is an Extra Infant Insert Required for Your Baby Carriers?

No, all our baby carriers can be used from day one without any special infant insert. Our baby carriers have adjustable settings, so they will fit newborns. Please watch our video tutorials if you feel uncertain about what to do.

Can I Breastfeed in a Baby Carrier from BabyBjörn?

You can breastfeed in the baby carrier, but it’s extremely important to always make sure that your baby’s airways are free. Once your baby has stopped feeding, you need to make certain that they adopt a position that does not obstruct their mouth and nose, so nothing restricts their breathing.

How Should I Dress My Baby in the Baby Carrier?

Obviously, this will vary according to season and temperature, but don’t dress your baby too warmly in the baby carrier since they get heat from your body as well. On colder days, we recommend using our windproof and water-resistant Winter Cover for Baby Carrier.

What Are the Benefits of Choosing a Baby Carrier in Mesh?

A baby carrier in mesh is a great choice if you want an airy and comfortable baby carrier. Breathable mesh allows good air circulation, so it’s comfortable to babywear even in warmer temperatures. Our mesh fabric also dries very quickly. Baby Carrier Mini, Baby Carrier Move, Baby Carrier One Air and Baby Carrier Harmony are all available in mesh!
